RTD is a high-precision industrial thermometer commonly used for temperature sensing below 500 degree . Resistance is an inherent physical property of any object. Platinum is an ideal material for making RTD because of its stable physical and chemical properties.When PT100 is at 0 degrees Celsius, its resistance is 100 ohms, and its resistance will increase at a uniform rate as the submission temperature increases.
Around 2000, thick and thin film platinum RTDs were successfully developed, which reduced the production and use costs of platinum RTD elements and made mass production and application of thermal resistors possible. Nowadays, thin film platinum RTD elements have replaced the use of glass, mica, ceramic-core platinum wire wound RTDs and copper RTD elements on most occasions.
Thin film platinum RTD technology, together with the invention of MIMS thermocouple technology in the 1980s, has pushed the development of the temperature sensor industry forward as major technological advancements in this field. Today, thin film platinum RTDs are expanding towards high-temperature applications.
